Fluorides

Close-up of industrial equipment with two metal pipes extending into a rectangular brick-like structure covered in dark, dusty material. The surrounding area is dimly lit, highlighting the texture and wear from aluminium processing on the pipes and surface where fluorides are often present.

About

The emissions of tetrafluoromethane (CF4) and hexafluoroethane (C2F6) from upsets in the electrochemical reduction of alumina to aluminium. Gaseous fluoride and particulate fluoride arise from the recycling of spent anode materials (“anode butts”) recovered from the electrolysis processes and molten bath.
